The tour had been thorough, as Zane had shown Eden the whole castle, including the stables, the barn, the guest cottage where Mary and Duncan lived and all the rooms. So far he hadn’t seen anything particularly special. It was a lovely castle and had a lot of family history, for sure.

Climbing back up the staircase that overlooked the foyer, Zane walked down the end of a hallway that they had been down before. “Alright. Are you ready?” Zane opened a door, revealing a stack of neatly folded towels.

Eden wasn’t sure if he was ready or not, as he didn’t know what was happening. As far as he could tell, they were standing in front of a closet.

Zane reached up to the top shelf of the closet and pushed a button, and the whole thing moved to the side. It was a false door! The doorway led to a passage, and Zane flipped on a light and went in first.

Eden followed, and the first thing he did was sneeze. It was very dusty and smelled a little like mildew.

As he followed Zane down what appeared to be a hallway, Zane’s voice echoed as he walked.

“This hallway was sealed off by your mother in the mid 1990s. Everything you are about to see is exactly as it was the day she sealed it off and had Duncan put in the fake closet front.” He paused at a closed door, and turned to Eden and said, “I come in here from time to time when I am missing her. It just...feels like her.”

Eden was blown away, and couldn’t wait to see what was behind the door.

Zane opened it, and stepped inside. Eden followed, and entered into a nursery. Although it was from the mid 1990s, it felt much, much older.

The last rays of sunlight streamed in through a window that hadn’t been cleaned in more than twenty-five years. There was a white wicker rocking chair, a matching bassinet, a white crib in a corner and a small toddler bed with Winnie the Pooh painted on the headboard. There was a hand-tufted rug on the floor, a small table and chairs with crayons and a coloring book of the Teletubbies on it.

Eden walked around as if he were in a weird dream. He ran his fingers along bookshelves with books like Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny. “What’s behind here?”

Zane opened it, and it was a bathroom with tub toys and a yellow fluffy duck robe.

Eden turned and asked the question he already knew the answer to. “Was this…?”

“Yes. This was your room.”

Eden was confused. “but, these are things for a toddler, not an infant. I don’t understand.”

“Eden, you lived with us for two years before you were adopted.”

“What?” This made no sense. He was raised by Susie and Gordon. He lived with them his whole life. Except…the baby pictures. There had been no baby pictures.

Suddenly, Eden remembered an old photo of himself as a toddler in an unfamiliar setting. He’d been given a bath and was wrapped in a yellow robe.
